Two-step verification

Protect your account with two-step verification

Two-step verification is an added layer of security that helps protect your account when you’re completing certain transactions online or in the Manulife Bank mobile app.

How does two-step verification work?

With two-step verification, you’ll sign into your account as usual using your password (that’s the first step.) Then you’ll be prompted to enter a code – which we’ll send to your verified mobile phone number or email address – to complete certain transactions (that’s the second step.) This makes sure you’re the only one who has access to your account, even if somebody else knows your password.

We’ll only send the code to your verified mobile phone number or personal email address, which you’ll confirm when you set up two-step verification.

When do I need to enter a code?

For your convenience, you’ll only need to enter the verification code when you’re performing these tasks or transactions:

  • Updating your contact information
  • Changing your password
  • Adding Interac e-Transfer® recipients
  • Adding new bills
  • Linking external bank accounts
  • Sending wire transfers

Each code expires after 10 minutes, so be sure to enter it right away. If the code expires, you’ll need to request a new one.

How do I set up two-step verification?

  1. Go to the More menu in the mobile app, then My profile & settings to turn on two-step verification
  2. Enter your primary mobile phone number or email address
  3. We'll send a verification code to the number or email you provide
  4. Enter the verification code to confirm your phone number or email

To update your phone number or email, sign into the mobile app and turn off two-step verification before switching your number or email, then turn it back on to register your new number or email address.

Other things to know about two-step verification

After 3 incorrect attempts, the code will be voided and you'll need to request a new one. You can get two codes every 10 minutes, so if you get 2 verification codes wrong 3 times, you'll have to wait 10 minutes to request a new code.
